Cimmerian block detachment from Gondwana: A slab pull origin?

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Cimmerian blocks are ribbons-like micro-continents that detached from the northern margin of Gondwana during closure Paleotethys ocean at end Permian. While it has been hypothesized slab pull forces induced by subduction beneath Eurasia could have driven extension in lower plate after mid-oceanic ridge subduction, so far, numerical modeling studies concluded these alone not sufficient to drive continental breakup. However, previous neglect olivine phase transitions mantle and likely underestimated pull. Here, we present simulations consider evolution density associated with metamorphic reactions analyze carefully when, where, how can lead formation micro-continents. Our results show marked increase related 410 km discontinuity, addition gravitational potential energy, cause rifting plate. Nonetheless, breakup is only achieved absence horizontal shear flow base lithosphere. In successful experiments, deformation localizes 100-200 on shore due bending stress pointing out this process probably always leads small ribbons. confirm tensional force dynamics may caused detachment blocks. Since promoted basal below Gondwana's lithosphere (with respect underlying mantle), argue provides information relative motion between tectonic plates mantle. demonstrate there a significant time-lag (i.e. time needed for reach discontinuity), which rarely accounted paleogeographic reconstructions.

Slab pull, slab weakening, and their relation to deep intra-slab seismicity

[1] Subduction zone seismicity is highly variable. Great earthquakes occur at few subduction zones around the world, with significant variation in size and frequency of deep events. Interactions between overriding and subducting plates and slab pull strength for individual plates provide a framework for understanding these variations. Previous work suggests an inverse correlation between great ...

Slab pull, mantle convection, and Pangaean assembly and dispersal

Two global-scale mantle convection cells presently exist on Earth, centred on upwelling zones in the South Pacific Ocean and northeast Africa: one cell (Panthalassan) contains only oceanic plates, the other (Pangaean) contains all the continental plates. They have remained fixed relative to one another for s 400 Ma. A transverse (Rheic^Tethyian) subduction system splits the Pangaean cell. Poloi...

Great earthquakes and slab pull : interaction between seismic coupling and plate^slab coupling

Great earthquakes, the few largest earthquakes that account for most of the Earth’s seismic energy release, have occurred at only a few subduction zones around the world. Strong locking, or ‘seismic coupling’, of the interface between plates at certain subduction zones is often invoked to explain these great earthquakes. Although past studies have correlated strong seismic coupling with a compr...

A Mesozoic bird from Gondwana preserving feathers

The fossil record of birds in the Mesozoic of Gondwana is mostly based on isolated and often poorly preserved specimens, none of which has preserved details on feather anatomy. We provide the description of a fossil bird represented by a skeleton with feathers from the Early Cretaceous of Gondwana (NE Brazil). The specimen sheds light on the homology and 3D structure of the rachis-dominated fea...

Slab detachment under the Eastern Alps seen by seismic anisotropy

We analyze seismic anisotropy for the Eastern Alpine region by inspecting shear-wave splitting from SKS and SKKS phases. The Eastern Alpine region is characterized by a breakdown of the clear mountain-chain-parallel fast orientation pattern that has been previously documented for the Western Alps and for the western part of the Eastern Alps. The main interest of this paper is a more detailed an...
